The Verdict: Good But Inconsistent
The server apologised as we checked our watches again. Thirty minutes since we'd ordered scrambled eggs and toast. Still nothing. We had to leave in 15 minutes to make our 09:00 disembarkation time.
We never got breakfast.
Food on Virgin Voyages Brilliant Lady was mixed bag. The concept of dining on Virgin Voyages is excellent. There's a variety of cuisines, no assigned seating, flexibility to eat when and where you want. Although the execution on our MerMaiden first sailing was hampered by capacity issues and crew learning curves.
This was Brilliant Lady's first proper full-capacity sailing. Virgin packed the ship before crew had time to find rhythm. The result? Long wait times, inconsistent food temperature, and that breakfast disaster that perfectly encapsulated the capacity planning problems.
Extra Virgin (easily our favourite restaurant onboard) delivered consistently excellent Italian. Pink Agave had brilliant dishes despite slow service. Wake steakhouse was as always lovely. The bar tab system is genuinely one of cruising's smartest value propositions.
Compared to our Athens sailing on Resilient Lady in May 2025, food quality was noticeably lower. We think this is temporary—first-sailing chaos rather than systemic problems. As crew settles in and Virgin adjusts operations, we expect significant improvement.

Extra Virgin: Best Restaurant
Extra Virgin is Virgin's Italian restaurant, and it's genuinely lovely. Elegant without being stuffy, warm lighting, comfortable seating, menu that focuses on classic Italian dishes done well.
The pasta was excellent. We tried three different dishes across two visits—cacio e pepe, carbonara, seafood linguine—and all three were spot-on. Pasta cooked perfectly al dente, sauces with proper depth of flavour, generous portions. This was closest we got to Athens-level food quality.

Service here was noticeably better than other venues. Our server (Giovanni) was attentive, efficient, clearly experienced. Kitchen was faster too with out starters arriving within 10 minutes, mains within 15. This is how cruise dining should work and our experiacne from previoous Virgin sailings.
WORTH IT? Absolutely. Book this one multiple times (if you can, Virgin Voyages do somtimes limit the number of times you can visit a resturant on a sailing). Best overall dining experience on Brilliant Lady.
Pink Agave: Good Food, Slow Service
Pink Agave is another one of our favourites from previous sailings but this time the service was slow. Our server was lovely—attentive, knowledgeable about menu, happy to make recommendations. But kitchen was clearly struggling with volume. We'd order appetizers, wait 20 minutes, order mains, wait another 25 minutes. By time dessert rolled around, we'd been at table for nearly two hours.
Fine if you're lingering over romantic dinner. Frustrating if you're trying to catch show afterwards.
WORTH IT? Yes, for food quality and a mexican feast.
The Galley: Convenient Chaos
The Galley is Virgin's food hall concept—multiple stations serving different cuisines (Mexican, Asian, Italian, comfort food, salads) all in one large casual dining space. Open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. No reservations needed.
On Resilient Lady, The Galley was brilliant. Quick service, hot food, plenty of variety. On Brilliant Lady, it was chaos.
Long queues at every station. Food running out mid-service. Confused crew still learning which dishes went where. Breakfast on disembarkation day took so long we literally had to leave before food arrived. That's unacceptable.
Food itself was fine when we actually got it. Mexican station did decent tacos and quesadillas. Asian station had solid noodle bowls. Italian station did fresh pasta. Nothing blew us away, but nothing was terrible. Just... fine.
WORTH IT? Convenient for quick meals, but first-sailing capacity issues made it frustrating. Expect significant improvement as crew finds rhythm.
Cost: Included | Reservations: Not required | Service speed: Inconsistent, often 20-30 minutes | Best for: Quick lunch when other restaurants full
The Wake
On this sailing we ate at The Wake several timesBoth were excellent—properly cooked, well-seasoned, presented beautifully. Sides (truffle fries, roasted vegetables) were generous and flavourful. This was meal that most felt like dining at proper high-end restaurant rather than cruise ship.
Razzle Dazzle: Drag Brunch Fun
Razzle Dazzle is Virgin's drag brunch venue—part restaurant, part cabaret show, part ridiculous fun. You book brunch slot, order from menu of breakfast and lunch dishes, and enjoy live drag performances while you eat.
Food was fine. Nothing groundbreaking—eggs benedict, pancakes, burgers, salads—but perfectly adequate. You're not here for Michelin-star cuisine. You're here for atmosphere and entertainment.
Drag performances were excellent. Funny, talented, genuinely entertaining. Queens worked room, interacted with guests, created energy that was infectious. This is what makes Virgin special—they're not just paying lip service to LGBTQ+ inclusivity; they're building it into DNA of experience.
What We Loved:
- Performers (talented, funny, engaging)
- Atmosphere (celebratory, inclusive, fun)
- Bottomless drinks option (if you upgrade via Splash for Your Bash)
What Was Just Okay:
- Food (fine but forgettable)
WORTH IT? Book this for entertainment, not food. One of most fun experiences on ship.
Cost: Included (or book Splash for Your Bash for $45 bottomless version) | Reservations: Required, book early
Bar Tab Strategy: Why $1,000 Was Perfect
Virgin's bar tab system is genuinely brilliant. You pre-purchase bar credit before sailing, load it onto account, use it throughout week for drinks. Virgin gives discount for pre-purchasing (usually around 10%), which makes loading more than you think you'll need smart financial move.
We loaded $1,000 USD (£860) onto our bar tab before sailing. For two people who enjoy cocktails, wine, and champagne regularly, this was absolutely perfect. We didn't skimp, didn't stress about drink costs, and still had credit left for bottle of Moët on final night.
How Bar Tab Works
Bar tab is linked to cabin. Both passengers sharing cabin can use same credit pool. Every time you order drink anywhere on ship, bartender scans your ship card and cost comes off balance.
Check balance anytime via Virgin app, which updates in near-real-time. If you run out mid-cruise, top up at Guest Services or via app. If you don't use all credit, Virgin refunds unused portion to original payment method after cruise. This policy removes any risk to loading more than you'll need.
What Bar Tab Covers
- All cocktails ($8-12, £7-10)
- Wine by glass or bottle ($30-70 bottle, £26-60)
- Champagne ($50-90 bottle, £43-77)
- Beer and cider ($6-8, £5-7)
- Spirits and mixers ($8-10, £7-8.50)
- Specialty coffees ($4-5, £3.50-4)
- Milkshakes and smoothies
- Some onboard retail (certain ship shops accept bar tab credit)
Our Bar Tab Breakdown
We loaded $1,000 for five nights. Here's roughly how we spent it:
Daily pattern:
- Morning coffee from The Dock: $5 each ($10 total)
- Lunchtime cocktail or wine: $10 each ($20 total)
- Afternoon cocktail or beer: $10 each ($20 total)
- Pre-dinner champagne on balcony: $15 each ($30 total)
- Dinner wine bottle shared: $40 average
- Post-dinner cocktails at parties: $10 each ($20 total)
- Late night nightcap: $10 each ($20 total)
Average daily spend: $90-100 between us. Some days less (when ashore in Bermuda), some days more (party nights when really going for it).
By final night, we had about $60 left, which we used for bottle of Moët ($55, £47).
Splash for Your Bash: Bottomless Brunch Hack
One of best-value uses of bar tab is Splash for Your Bash, Virgin's bottomless brunch. Costs around $45 per person (£39), genuinely bottomless—unlimited cocktails, champagne, and food for two hours.
We booked this on third day at sea. Arrived 12:00, left 14:30 (yes, we stayed longer than allocated two hours—nobody rushed us), absolutely made most of those bottomless drinks. We had at least six cocktails each, plus champagne, plus food. If you'd bought drinks individually, you'd easily spend $60-80 per person (£52-69).
💡 TIP: Book Splash for Your Bash early in cruise. Slots fill up quickly, especially on full-capacity sailings. We booked ours on embarkation day and still only just got spot.
WORTH IT? Absolutely. Load $1,000 (£860) for two moderate drinkers on 5-night sailing. Book Splash for Your Bash for ridiculous value. Pre-purchase discount saves 10%.
Coffee Situation
Virgin has several coffee options around ship:
The Dock (coffee shop): Proper barista-made coffee—lattes, cappuccinos, flat whites. Charged to bar tab around $4-5 (£3.50-4) per drink. Good quality coffee, friendly baristas, quick service. This was our daily stop.
Sip (champagne and coffee bar): Specialty coffees and champagne. Same coffee quality as The Dock, different location. Also charged to bar tab.
Self-service coffee stations: Free coffee available around ship (The Galley, pool deck, various lounges). Drinkable but nothing special—standard cruise ship coffee.
If you're serious about coffee, budget for proper barista drinks in bar tab. Free stuff will keep you caffeinated but won't delight you. We spent about $50 (£43) total on coffee over five days.
Booking Tips
Book restaurants immediately after boarding: Popular time slots (19:00-20:00) fill quickly on full-capacity sailings. Use Virgin app to book as soon as you're on ship.
Book Splash for Your Bash on embarkation day: Slots sell out fast. Don't wait.
Request specific servers: If you have excellent server (like Giovanni at Extra Virgin), ask for them again when booking next visit.
Avoid The Galley peak times: 07:30-09:00 breakfast, 12:00-13:30 lunch, 18:00-19:30 dinner all packed. Go 30 minutes before or after if possible.
Never rely on disembarkation day breakfast: Seriously. Kitchen can't handle volume. Grab coffee and pastries from The Dock instead.
Load bar tab before sailing: Get 10% discount. Better to overestimate—unused credit refunds.
